Alabama has chosen a new beauty queen. Her name is Sara and she is a plus-size model. She is now being attacked for this.
After years of trying, Sara Milliken, a 23-year-old plus-size model, has won the title of Miss Alabama USA. Surprised and delighted by her success, she admitted she had only hoped to make it into the top 10. In November, she will compete in the national finals in Orlando.
But her joy is mixed with anger. According to The Sun, Sara has received a flood of criticism from merciless trolls. One hater claimed that Sara was extremely “unhealthy” and “embarrassing” for Alabama.
But the winner was not put off and countered her critics. “Even something you type on a screen can leave a lasting impression on people,” The Sun quoted her as saying. She added that the hostility directed at her was disgusting.
“I received over 2000 comments. There was a lot of positive, but also a lot of negative. The things some people said were really disgusting. I don’t want to dwell on it,” Sara writes on Instagram.
“A few days before the pageant, a mean boy told me I was ‘too ugly’ to win. I wanted to prove him wrong and went into the competition weekend with a lot of enthusiasm,” she told the Daily Mail.
She now plans to “break the glass ceilings in the beauty industry to pave the way for other women to achieve their dreams – regardless of their shape or size.”
