Austria’s traffic measures are causing a kilometer-long truck traffic jam. Italy’s Transport Minister Matteo Salvini strongly criticizes this and calls on the EU to intervene.

Due to driving bans for heavy traffic, a truck traffic jam of around 80 kilometers long had formed on the Brenner motorway heading north. According to “Heute.at”, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini described this situation as an “ecological, economic and social disgrace”.
Salvini sharply criticized Austria’s approach to the transport issue. He used the current situation as an example of the lack of European spirit and the lack of cooperation between peoples within the EU. According to him, he hopes that such incidents will not happen again in the future.
He went on to call on the European institutions to intervene to defend Italy, but above all to maintain legality.
Salvini is quoted by news outlets as saying he expects the European Court of Justice, which the Italian government has appealed, to put an end to the “arrogant and unlawful attitude of the Austrian government.” This attitude would cause enormous damage to the environment and economic freedom – he alleged.
According to “Heute.at”, Salvini is calling on the EU Commission to take measures against Austria by May 14th if, like Italy, it finds that Austria has violated EU law.
