Toll prices: towards a discount granted by motorway companies this summer?

This summer, 80% of French people will take the car to go on vacation. In addition to fuel prices, which are still very high, the price of tolls has also increased. The increase is 2% on average compared to 2021. Clément Beaune, new Minister of Transport, therefore invited motorway companies to “make a gesture” during an interview with Le Parisien this Sunday, July 10.

“We are going, with Bercy, to bring together all the players around the table, to think about actions. It would be useful for the motorway companies to make a gesture. As Total Energies and others have been able to do, in the stations -service,” he said. The one who recently succeeded Jean-Baptiste Djebbari also clarified that the reduction of 18 cents per liter on fuel would be extended until the fall. It should be gradually replaced by a “workers’ fuel allowance” in the amount of 100 to 200 euros. In any case, this is what is envisaged in the purchasing power bill presented on Thursday 7 July.

Many French people still opt for the car to go on vacation despite the explosion of certain costs. This choice could partly be explained by the problems currently faced by travelers wishing to take the train or the plane. The beginning of vacation departures was indeed marked by strikes at the SNCF and in the airports. “Social dialogue has been fruitful and has made it possible to find purchasing power measures for employees. It must continue,” said Clément Beaune.

At the same time, the price of train tickets has exploded this year due, in particular, to strong demand from the French for this mode of transport. On this subject, the Minister called on the SNCF to develop its offers. “And, above all, continue to set up cheaper trips for those who have less means or more time,” he pleaded. Since April 2022, the railway company has already started to reoperate Corail trains in order to offer train tickets at 10 euros between Paris and Lyon and between Paris and Nantes.
