More than 14% of the world’s population has had Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, according to a compilation published Tuesday, June 14, 2022 in the journal BMJ Global Health. Central Europe would have the highest infection rate with 20%. Men over the age of fifty who live in rural areas are most at risk, according to the study. In the forests, ticks cling to the skin of deer, while those that inhabit the grasslands attach themselves more to cows and rodents. In parks and gardens, dogs and humans are the main victims of these pests.

For their part, organizations specializing in the ecology of ticks have drawn up a map delimiting the areas most favorable to the presence of Ixodes ricinus, vector of Lyme disease. “We learn that it flourishes more in the Center, the North-East and the South-West, less in the Mediterranean region and in the high mountains”, underlines Le Parisien.
