Terrorist threat: the scenario that shakes the executive

Disaster scenario. The terrorist threat is still significant in France, even if it has been relegated to the background by the Covid-19 pandemic for the past two years. Currently, as explained by the site of the Paris police headquarters, the entire territory is in heightened security for risk of attack, which the Minister of the Interior has not forgotten. Asked by Agence France Presse, in an interview relayed by TF1 Info, Gérald Darmanin spoke about the security of sporting events such as the Football World Cup, thinking above all of the 2024 Olympic Games in France.

Unsurprisingly, the government has a fear, that of a major attack during a major meeting. With the agency, he explains that “the main terrorist threat of today and tomorrow, [is] a drone loaded with explosives which goes on a crowd, on an exposed team, on an opening ceremony like at the Olympics, for example. “When we organize an event like this, cyber attacks, the fight against drones, questions of terrorist threats, the flow of people are important subjects,” he adds in the interview. As a reminder, the Olympic Games are to be held in France from July 26, 2024 to Sunday August 11, 2024, in several cities in France, including Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon and Marseille, but also in Tahiti.

If he does not show his cards for the security of the 2024 Olympic Games, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin explains that he can draw inspiration from “certain things” seen during this Football World Cup. “It’s intelligence and experience to know for tomorrow, for the Rugby World Cup and the Olympics. There is something to learn from previous competitions, it’s also the last big competition before our own competitions organized in France”, he added to AFP.
