Shortages linked not only to the war in Ukraine, but also to the multiple episodes of heat waves and the ensuing drought, which have heavily affected the cultivation of certain fruits and vegetables, such as potatoes. But these phenomena of shortages or stockouts did not happen alone. They have indeed been accompanied by high inflation which has increased very significantly in recent months, reaching a peak of 6.1% in July 2022. On the other hand, the month of August is intended to be slightly buoyant hope since, for the first time since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we have witnessed a slowdown in inflation which was, this month, 5.8%.

“This drop in inflation would be due to the slowdown in energy prices,” explains the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee). Conversely, service prices should progress “at the same pace as the previous month”, while inflation for manufactured goods and food should continue to accelerate.
