(Lausanne) Mexico has stated its desire to host the 2036 or 2040 Summer Olympics and mentions that it already has the majority of the necessary sports infrastructure.

Mexico City once hosted the 1968 Summer Games.

Interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics had already been expressed by officials from countries including Egypt, England, India, Indonesia, Qatar and South Korea.

Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Mexican Olympic Committee President María José Alcalá met with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach on Friday. Ebrard delivered a letter of intent to Bach.

A city or region was not specified, but Ebrard and Alcalá said a committee would be formed to support the initiative.

Last October, IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper said he was talking to “10 interested National Olympic Committees and regions on four continents” about potential bids for future Summer Games. The 2036 Games are the next to be granted.
