Storms: the 5 electrical appliances to be unplugged as a priority

Fire, burns, electrification or even electrocution… The risks associated with thunderstorms are not to be taken lightly. When possible, take cover as soon as thunder rolls. If you are safer at home than elsewhere, there are still risks of fires or domestic accidents in your home. According to the site of the firefighters of France, it is necessary to avoid a certain number of risky behaviors:

Also, it’s a good idea to unplug electronics in your home when there’s a storm in the air. If lightning strikes your home, there is a risk of a power surge. Some connections are more dangerous than others, and must imperatively be disconnected first. Here are the ones in our slideshow.

For added security, you can unplug all devices that are not essential to you.

According to Le Dauphiné Libéré, it is useless to cut off your electricity meter in the event of a storm because it “does not guarantee that the accommodation is protected from overvoltages”. The best reflex is therefore to unplug all the cables and connections that you can do without. “You can also disconnect the antenna cable from your television because this type of connection is exposed to strong surges which could cause the implosion of the television, as well as the internet box”, specifies the local daily.

According to the EDF website, there are two protection tools for homes:

EDF nevertheless specifies that these two pieces of equipment are not compulsory, except in regions at risk of storms. Indeed, our houses and apartments are often protected by the proximity of taller or equipped buildings. If your own house is equipped with a lightning rod, the installation of a lightning arrester by a professional is however mandatory.
