The municipality of Colònia de Sant Pere on the east coast of Mallorca is running out of water. The lack of rainfall has reduced the town’s water reserves to a minimum. Now tough measures are being taken to help.

After the villages of Banyalbufar and Estellencs in the Serra Tramuntana on the popular Balearic island had literally turned off the tap for their citizens, another Mallorcan municipality has now declared a water emergency.

Due to the lack of rainfall, the water level in the municipal water reservoir of Colònia de Sant Pere on the east coast of Mallorca has dropped to a minimum.

The situation is “cause for concern,” said Mayor Manolo Galán. For this reason, there are now strict conditions for the consumption of tap water. The order applies to Colònia de Sant Pere, S’Estanyol and Montferrutx.

From now on, each resident is only allowed to use 117 litres of tap water per day. Watering gardens, filling swimming pools and washing cars is prohibited, as the “Mallorca Magazine” writes.

In principle, all activities that require high water consumption should be avoided. Compliance with the rules is monitored by the local police.

As Mallorca Magazine further writes, the municipality asked residents for understanding on Thursday (June 6, 2024). At the same time, it called for help. If individuals do not comply with the water regulations, further restrictions will be imposed.
