“Anyone have an Apple charger?” This phrase that regularly rings in our ears will soon be a thing of the past. After almost 13 years of discussion and debate between MEPs, the European Parliament has come to a decision.
“Consumers will no longer need a different charging device and cable each time they purchase a new device, and will be able to use one charger for all their small and medium-sized portable electronic devices,” he announced on Tuesday, June 7, as reported by the Huffington Post.
For European Commissioner Thierry Breton, this decision is based on two objectives: “More savings for European consumers, and less waste for the planet”, he declared on Twitter.
Thus, finished micro USB or Lightning cables and place in USB-C. Indeed, it is on this last type of connector that the European Parliament has chosen. A rather logical decision given that this type of connection is already suitable for the majority of the devices concerned.
This measure should be in place by the fall of 2024. From then on, various types of devices will have no choice but to get up to date. Indeed, smartphones and tablets are far from being the only high-tech objects to be concerned. Earphones and headphones, digital cameras, portable video game consoles, e-readers and portable speakers, if they are rechargeable via a wired cable, can therefore now be recharged with the same cables.
The Parliament also plans to harmonize chargers for computers, but we will have to be a little more patient because the implementation should take longer. Cables should be harmonized for larger devices by 2026.
