(Islamabad) Seven Pakistani soldiers were killed Sunday in the explosion of their vehicle in the northwest of the country, a region bordering Afghanistan, the army announced.

Six soldiers and an officer were killed “by an improvised explosive device” in the Lakki Marwat district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, she details in a press release.

A police officer stationed in Lakki Marwat, who requested anonymity, told AFP that “the explosion completely destroyed the vehicle.”

The mountainous region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has long been home to Islamist groups like the Pakistani Taliban and the local chapter of the Islamic State group.

No one has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack.

The Pakistani Taliban, known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), are the most active in the region and regularly attack security forces.

Attacks have increased in Pakistan since the Taliban regained power in neighboring Afghanistan in August 2021.
