Saturday in the NHL | Sidney Crosby reaches 1,500 career points

Read reports from Saturday’s NHL games.

Sidney Crosby had two goals and an assist on Saturday, becoming the 15th player in National League history with at least 1,500 career points.

He helped the Pittsburgh Penguins win 5-1 over the Detroit Red Wings.

The Penguins captain has 550 goals and 950 assists.

Crosby reached the milestone of 1500 points in 1188 games; only five players did it faster.

He reached the plateau on the power play in the third period, collecting his 33rd goal of the season.

The accomplices were Kristopher Letang and Jake Guentzel.

Evgeni Malkin, Alex Nylander and Danton Heinen scored the other goals for the Penguins, who have the first of two additional playoff berths in the East.

With 16 straight Spring Ball appearances, the club has the longest such streak in North America in major sports.

The Penguins have 90 points. Florida and the Islanders started the day one point behind and a game in hand.

Tristan Jarry made 19 saves, only being beaten by Pius Suter.

Ville Husso stopped 23 shots.

Tage Thompson broke the tie at 6:15 in the third period and the Buffalo Sabers won 4-3 at the expense of the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

Rasmus Dahlin provided a goal and two assists.

His 15th goal is the most for a Sabers defenseman since 1997-98, when Alexei Zhitnik had the same tally.

Casey Mittelstadt added a brace for the Sabres, who still have slim hopes of making the playoffs.

Buffalo is four points from goal, with four games to go.

The team will play again on Monday night in New York against the Rangers.

Young Devon Levi made 32 saves, improving his record to 3-1.

Sebastian Aho (his 35th), Seth Jarvis and Jesper Fast were the scorers for Carolina.

Antii Raanta stopped 26 shots for the Hurricanes, who will be visiting Ottawa on Monday night.
