(Paris) Canadian Carol Zhao advanced to the second qualifying round at the French Open on Tuesday after struggling to defeat Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa 6-4, 5-7 and 6-1.

Zhao, 177th in the world, will have an appointment in the next round with the Czech Sara Bejlek, 180th in the world.

For her part, Ontario’s Katherine Sebov bowed out 3-6, 6-0 and 6-2 ahead of Croatian Petra Marcinko.

On the men’s side, Quebecer Gabriel Diallo lost 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the first round of qualifying on French clay against Kazakh Timofey Skatov.

Zhao is trying to join his compatriots Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Annie Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov in the main draw of this second major tournament of the season.
