Each day is enough to remember. This Friday, January 6, 2023, a ham marketed in nine distribution brands was removed from the shelves. This is a smoked superior cooked ham from the Charcuterie Begein brand, marketed between December 13 and 29, 2022. The packs of 2 and 5 slices are affected by the recall. In question, the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, the agent responsible for listeriosis. Here are the relevant references:
In our slideshow below, discover the nine supermarkets where this ham was marketed. Please note: only a few departments are concerned, namely Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Deux-Sèvres, Vendée and Vienne.
The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes is responsible for listeriosis, a serious food-borne infection that can lead to sepsis or an infection of the central nervous system. According to the official website of the Institut Pasteur, contamination can also be the cause of an abortion, premature delivery or even a serious neonatal infection in the event of pregnancy. “In France, the disease remains rare (incidence of 5 to 6 cases per million inhabitants), but fatal in 30 to 40% of cases occurring outside of pregnancy”, specifies the foundation.
To avoid infection, it is better to avoid cross-contamination of food. Here are some tips from the Institut Pasteur:
