Raclette, popcorn… These products banned from the Strasbourg Christmas market this year

A Christmas market like no other. While it is due to start on November 25, the famous Strasbourg Christmas market will be very different this year. Indeed, the municipality, led by Europe Ecologie les Verts, has this time decided to ban the sale of a certain number of products.

This decision follows the wishes of several local residents who regretted that this event had been less close to Alsatian traditions for several years. To give a more authentic aspect to this market, the town hall has appointed a “citizen jury” and established a commission made up of elected officials, traders and “qualified persons”, reports La Dépêche.

Following this decision, several foods and goods were banned:

Champagne was also banned to favor local crémant. However, following numerous protests, the town hall assured that it would discuss it with the traders, as revealed by DNA.

For regulars of the Christmas market, this announcement is “brutal and a little shocking”, as confides a resident of the region who goes there regularly.

“It is true that the Christmas market in recent years has become a little nonsense, there are no more local products. We find a little bit the same things on all the stands that are not don’t necessarily have any interest. There’s a lack of new crafts,” she continues, adding, “I don’t see how a glass of champagne will denaturalize the tradition of the Christmas market.”
