The level of mathematics of the French is well known for not being the best in the world. Indeed, in 2022, France was fortieth in the ranking of the level of mathematics of the countries of the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OECD). Just ahead of France are Albania and Kazakhstan. Conversely, Singapore tops the ranking followed by South Korea, Russia and Japan. Almost last in the ranking, France is struggling to improve the level of mathematics of its population.
In an attempt to improve students’ understanding of mathematics, Jean-Michel Blanquer, former Minister of National Education, wanted to increase the number of hours devoted to mathematics at the start of 2022. With the 2019 reform removing the Scientific, Economic and social and literary, students had the choice of taking mathematics as an option. At the start of the 2021 school year, BFM reported that 37% of them chose this subject as their specialty.
Nevertheless, at the start of the 2022 school year, the Minister of Education, Pap Ndiaye, decided to reintegrate mathematics into the common core. The objective is then to strengthen the level of these students and not to abandon this subject after the second class, as was the case for many high school students. Young people in general first class then have an hour and a half of additional lessons to allow them to consolidate their level. This material will then be assessed as part of continuous monitoring.
