27.4%. Here is the share of French people aged 60 and over in 2022 in France, against 20.4% in 2002, according to Médiamétrie. As Le Parisien relayed this weekend of Sunday March 12, 2023, television is still as popular with seniors, while young audiences seem to be deserting the small screen for online video platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video) .

“In 2022, the average age of all the channels is 57 years old. It was 48 years old in 2010”, detailed our colleagues. It is clear that all the PAF channels have aged over the years. Among the most watched daily by the senior public, the channels of the France Télévisions group come first (66 years old on average for France 3, 65 years old for France 5 and 62 years old for France 2).

A trend that is confirmed both by our readers and consumers of the small screen. For Yolande, a 66-year-old retired accountant, her tastes are quite striking. “I really appreciate the police fiction of France 3, like Inspector Barnaby”, she admits for Planet. But, she also has a weakness for private channels. “On the weekend, I also appreciate the afternoon reports on TF1 or even the people subjects of 50min Inside”, also says this former faithful of Love is in the meadow on M6.

The flagship program hosted by Karine Le Marchand is one of the only ones to give (quite significant) exposure to seniors on television. Are they fond of love stories between farmers and their suitors? “In reality TV dating programs, it’s hard to imagine a romance with people of a certain age”, already mentioned Nathalie Nadaud-Albertini, media sociologist and reality TV specialist, for Planet in 2020.
