Property tax: the 20 cities where it has increased the most

The deadline is approaching. On October 17 or 22, depending on the method of payment, French owners will have to pay the housing tax. But this year, the note will be particularly salty for the taxpayers concerned.

This local tax has indeed experienced an exceptional increase which has not failed to mark the spirits. According to the latest National Observatory of Property Taxes carried out by the National Union of Property Owners (UNPI) and unveiled by Le Parisien, between 2021 and 2022, property tax increased by an average of 4.7% in the 200 largest cities in France.

For comparison, this increase was 1.3% between 2020 and 2021. This sharp increase would be due in particular to the inflation that hit the country, intensifying over the months. The legal increase in rental values, calculated according to inflation, jumped 3.4% this year, it is the strongest level of revaluation reached since 1989. This partly explains such a sharp increase in the tax land.

Only, if the tax is much higher this year, it is likely that this trend will intensify in the years to come. The finance bill, presented at the end of September, notably includes an increase in rental values of 7%, more than double this year. However, a majority amendment should be tabled to limit this increase to 3.5%, report our colleagues.

This year’s increase is particularly reflected in some cities where the level of property tax increase has reached up to 23.9%. Here is the list of the 20 cities where it was most important.
