Stellantis Recalls Over 200,000 Vehicles Due to Critical Software Issue

Stellantis, a multinational car manufacturer, has issued a recall for more than 200,000 SUVs and pickup trucks following the discovery of a critical software malfunction. The recall affects a total of 211,581 vehicles, with the main issue being related to the electronic stability control (ESC) system. This safety feature is designed to prevent the loss of steering control during emergency situations.

Among the models impacted by the recall are the 2022 Dodge Durango, 2022 Ram 2500, and 2022 Ram 3500. The Ram 2500 is the most heavily affected, with nearly 158,000 pickups included in the recall. Additionally, over 53,000 Dodge Durangos and 524 Ram 3500s are part of the recall. Stellantis plans to begin notifying affected vehicle owners in late July, urging them to bring their vehicles to dealerships for a free update to their anti-lock braking systems.

The root cause of the problem lies in a defect within the anti-lock braking system (ABS), leading to the deactivation of the ESC system. This malfunction significantly raises the risk of accidents, particularly in hazardous conditions such as icy or flooded roads, where ESC systems play a crucial role in maintaining vehicle stability during sudden maneuvers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted the dangers of disabled stability systems, noting that they increase the likelihood of crashes. Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of ESC systems in reducing fatal collisions, particularly in single-vehicle and rollover incidents. Since 2012, the NHTSA has mandated the inclusion of ESC systems in all new passenger vehicles.

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of software reliability in modern vehicles, where technology is integral to ensuring safety on the roads. Stellantis’ swift action in addressing this issue is essential for upholding trust and safety among its customer base. Vehicle owners are strongly advised to heed the recall notice promptly to guarantee the continued safety of their vehicles.

Stellantis currently boasts ownership of 16 different international brands.
