(NYC) National Football League officials suspended five players on Friday for violating the league’s gambling policy.
Two Detroit Lions players, wideout Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore, as well as Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, have been suspended indefinitely.
Two other Lions players, wide receivers Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams, have been suspended for six games.
Cephus, Moore and Toney are suspended until at least the conclusion of the 2023 season for betting on NFL games during the 2022 season. They will be able to seek reinstatement at the end of the 2023 season.
For their part, Berryhill and Williams were suspended for having bet, from a place attached to the NFL, on games other than those of the league.
They will be able to participate in all activities leading up to the start of the season, including exhibition games. Their suspension will begin after the last cuts within the formation.
The Lions released Cephus and Moore on Friday.
Brad Holmes, executive vice president and general manager of the Lions, said in a press release that the players “have made decisions that are inconsistent with the values of our organization and violate league rules.”
Holmes also said the organization will work with Berryhill and Williams “to ensure they understand the seriousness of these breaches and clearly understand the rules of the league going forward.”
In a press release, Commanders executives said the team has “cooperated fully with the NFL investigation since being made aware of it and supports the league’s findings and actions.” .
