(Eagan) Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL have agreed on the parameters of a three-year contract extension that will keep him in place through 2027.

The information came Tuesday from Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay during league meetings.

Goodell’s current contract expires in 2024. He has served as league commissioner since replacing Paul Tagliabue in 2006.

“It’s always good news,” said Irsay in suburban Minneapolis, where the owners held their spring meetings. I think we still have to approve it so to speak, but it’s pretty much done. »

Irsay is under the impression that Goodell will retire after the new pact, and also that he will get involved in some form of mentoring a potential successor.

“We will seek his input in any way we can,” Irsay said.

Goodell attempted to play down the subject and declined to confirm a deal.

“It’s not extended today, that’s for sure. I focused on other things, Goodell said. I have a year left. I love my work. I have no doubt that we will come to an agreement. When this is done, you will be notified. »

Irsay raised with reporters the possibility of possibly splitting the role into two, one senior executive for business and one for football, similar to how most NFL teams are run.

“It’s a healthy discussion to have,” Goodell said. The job changes over the years. This has changed even since I took office. I know we will have these discussions at the appropriate time. »
