Six names are finalists to designate the new Utah club.
Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) announced Thursday that the names selected are Blizzard, Mammoth, Outlaws, Venom, Yeti and Utah Hockey Club, or Utah HC.
These are the options available to fans of the team, after the process was launched with 20 possibilities and 520,000 ballots were filled out. Fans will have until midnight on June 20 to select the name that will be selected.
Owner Ryan Smith has already indicated that he expects to see the name “Utah” appear on jerseys in their first season of operation. He told the Associated Press as he prepared to take possession of the concession that the name would have to somehow imply the name “Utah.”
Last week, SEG filed eight applications for a logo/wordmark involving the name of the state or the Utah Hockey Club in pale blue and black. One of them could be the temporary name or logo until the Doubleday business
SEG, which already owns the Utah Jazz in the NBA, purchased the team formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes for US$1.2 billion and moved it to Salt Lake City. It was impossible to keep the name “Coyotes” since their ex-owner, Alex Maruelo, kept the name and logo in hopes of bringing a franchise back to Arizona – provided he managed to build a new amphitheater in the Phoenix area.
