NASA to Try history-making helicopter flight on Mars

In a historic first, NASA will try to start a helicopter to flight on Mars next month.

NASA stated this week it is targeting no sooner than April 8 to the flight effort, but the helicopter should first pass a set of readiness landmarks.

The cosmic helicopter also conveys a slice of history with it since it tries to make history, also pays homage to the Wright brothers’ first airplane flight.

“Every step we’ve taken since this trip started six decades ago was uncharted land in the background of aircraft,” Bob Balaram, the Mars Enforcement chief engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a statement. “And while becoming set up to the surface is going to be a large challenge, living that first night on Mars alone, with no rover protecting it and maintaining it motivated, will be a much larger one.”

Perseverance, occasionally dubbed”Percy,” is now en route to a airfield from where Ingenuity will try to lift .

The space agency cautioned that taking flight Mars faces a lot more hurdles than flying on Earth — such as different gravity levels and atmospheric density.

“Aptly named, Ingenuity is a tech demonstration that intends to be the first powered flight on a different world and, even if effective, could further enlarge our horizons and expand the reach of what’s possible with Mars exploration,” Lori Glaze, the manager of the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters, said in a statement.
