Monaco Grand Prix | Max Verstappen ahead of Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon

(Monaco) Dutchman Max Verstappen dominated Sunday’s Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco and his fourth win in six races since the start of the season extended his lead at the top of the Monaco standings. drivers championship.

Spanish veteran Fernando Alonso, driving his Aston Martin, finished second, ahead of Frenchman Esteban Ocon, on Alpine.

His teammate Lance Stroll was forced to retire after damaging his vehicle and he had to settle for 20th and last place.

For most of the race, Verstappen drove on a dry, narrow track, where overtaking a rival is the toughest exercise in Formula 1.

But a Monaco Grand Prix without the slightest incident is rare, and heavy rain disrupted the event with around 20 laps to negotiate out of the 78 of the race.

Some drivers had stopped at the pits to put their car on the wrong intermediate tires shortly before the downpour and lost their grip on the track.

Carlos Sainz Jr. slid sideways into the wall and was lucky not to damage his Ferrari, while Kevin Magnussen lost control of his Haas.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was fourth and collected an additional point for the fastest lap. His teammate George Russell finished in fifth place.

On Saturday, Verstappen had dominated qualifying by 84 thousandths of a second over Alonso, robbing the Spaniard of his first pole position in 11 years.

As for Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate, he finished 16th after starting the race from 20th and last on the grid.

Winner for the second time in Monaco, Verstappen has 39 career victories, all with Red Bull.
