Manager Luis Rojas announced that Jacob deGrom, a right-handed pitcher for the New York Mets, will be placed on the 10-day injured reserve list due to right forearm tightness.
The tightness was first felt by the Mets’ ace before the All-Star Game. He decided on Friday that he wouldn’t be able to make Sunday’s scheduled start. Taijuan Walker will take his place against Pittsburgh.
On Friday, DeGrom had an MRI that confirmed that the problem is in his forearm. There is also no structural damage to his elbow. Rojas stated that the injury is not due to an earlier forearm flexor injury suffered by deGrom earlier in the season.
DeGrom stated, “I’m frustrated.” “I don’t know what to say.” It’s good news when structurally everything is good. But, the frustration level right now is very high.”
He also has had to deal with back, shoulder, and lat injuries this season but still has a major league-best 1.08 ERA.
Rojas stated that the Mets have yet to announce a similar transaction and that they do not have a plan as to who will play the first two games in a series at Cincinnati beginning Monday.
The IL stint will be re-dated. In the middle of an 18-game stretch for the Mets, he will be eligible to make his return July 25.
