On September 28, 2022, the biopic Blonde is released on Netflix, retracing the life of American icon Marilyn Monroe. To play the lead role in Andrew Dominik’s film, adapted from Joyce Oates’ bestseller, actress Ana de Armas was chosen. To embody the star of the 1950s, Ben Affleck’s ex-girlfriend went to the actress’s grave to ask for her blessing, as she revealed in an interview with AnOther magazine.
“We took a big card and each member of the team wrote a message on it that was addressed to him. Then we went to the cemetery and put this card on his grave. In a way, we asked his permission”, she explained and continued: “Everyone felt a huge responsibility, and we all had in mind what part of the story we were going to tell – the story of Norma Jeane, the person behind the character of Marilyn Monroe. Who was she really?
This film, prohibited for those under 18, also includes sex scenes that “will go viral”, as she explained to Variety. “I did things in this film that I would never have done for someone else, but I accepted for her (Marilyn Monroe Editor’s note), and for Andrew”, she had declared and to continue “I know they’re going to go viral, and it’s disgusting. It’s infuriating just to think about it, but I have no control over it. You can never really control what people do with images, how they can take them out of context”.
