(San Francisco) Atthaya Thitikul birdied on the 16th hole as Thailand earned a win over Australia in the LPGA Tour International Crown Final on Sunday.
Thitikul beat Stephanie Kyriacou 4-and-2 to improve her record this week to 5-0 and give her country the winning point. It was Thailand’s first title at this tournament which is played in a match format.
Patty Tavatanakit had already defeated Hannah Green 4-and-3 in the other singles matchup.
Sisters Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn won their doubles match against Minjee Lee and Sarah Kemp by a score of 4-and-3. Seeded sixth, Thailand ended the week winning 11 of their 12 matches.
The United States defeated Sweden in the consolation final for third place.
The International Crown is a tournament featuring teams of four golfers from eight countries. These are divided into two groups. The top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals, where the format dictates two matches in singles and another in alternating strokes.
Players on the winning team receive US$125,000 each while runners-up get their hands on $75,900 each.
It was a breakout weekend for Thailand, who had never finished higher than the fourth tier in the tournament’s first three performances.
