(Munich) Released in the 9th minute of play on Saturday in Mainz, Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies suffers from a muscle tear in his left thigh, Bayern announced on Sunday, without specifying the duration of the absence of the Canadian International.

In a run on his left side early in the game in Mainz, Davies stopped by holding his left thigh and was replaced in stride by Moroccan Noussair Mazraoui.

“Alphonso Davies will be missed at Bayern for now. The 22-year-old Canadian was injured against Mainz and suffered a torn muscle in the back of his left thigh. This was revealed by medical examinations,” the Bavarian club said in a statement on Sunday.

The injury comes at the worst time for Davies, with five weeks left in the league and a torn muscle requiring at least three to four weeks off before he can play again.

With their 3-1 defeat at Mainz, Bayern lost the top spot to rivals Borussia Dortmund. Five games from the end of the season, Dortmund is one point ahead of Bayern (60 against 59), in the midst of a crisis for three weeks (eliminated in the Champions League and the German Cup).
