Before she met a doom and became an icon for many bereaved fans, Lady Diana grew up far from notoriety. On July 1, 1961 Frances and Edward Spencer welcome their fourth child, a young girl, to Sandringham, in rural Norfolk, southern England.

But all is not rosy for the little family. As Andrew Morton’s biography Diane Told by Herself reveals, he was a son the mother was expecting and it took more than a week before Diana was christened.

During her first three years, the little girl is considered one child too many. However, in 1964, Charles Spencer, his little brother, was born, and therefore the parents had an heir. Immediately, the future Princess of Wales became very attached to this child, as reported by Vanity Fair.

In 1967, a new misfortune strikes the Spencer family. Frances, the mother, leaves husband and children and leaves with another. This event marks a turning point in the life of Lady Diana who finds herself with her two sisters, her brother and a very absent father.

“The biggest upheaval was Mom’s decision to leave home. That’s the most vivid memory for all four of us. Each of us has our own interpretation of what should have happened and what happened. People were taking position. Several people stopped speaking to each other. For my brother and me, this experience proved to be very destabilizing and painful”, explained later the Princess of Wales.

Despite these complicated beginnings, Lady Diana is a woman with an exceptional destiny admired by many people. Discover in our slideshow the most beautiful photos of his childhood.
