Iberdrola and Fertiberia have signed an agreement to invest 150 million euros in the construction of the largest hydrogen plant green for industrial use in Europe in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) and that will be operational in 2021.

Its development and construction will generate 700 jobs and, once operational, will prevent the emission of 39.000 tons of CO2 per year.

Iberdrola is responsible for the production of hydrogen green from sources 100% renewable. The solution will be integrated with a photovoltaic solar plant of 100 MW, a system of lithium-ion batteries with a storage capacity of 20 MWh, and one of the largest systems of production of hydrogen by electrolysis of the world (20 MW), as explained today the company presides over Ignacio Galán.

hydrogen green produced will be used in the Fertiberia’s ammonia plant in Puertollano. This plant is already one of the most efficient of the European Union, with a production capacity exceeding 200,000 tonnes per year . Fertiberia will update and amend the plant to be able to use the production of hydrogen and green, in this way, the manufacture of green fertilizers.

Fertiberia will be able to reduce by more than 10% the needs of gas natural in the plant and will be the first european company in the sector that develops a experience to large-scale generation of ammonia green.

The project will be developed in the municipality of Puertollano, in Ciudad Real, in a privileged location, with an important industrial pole and in which is located the National Hydrogen Centre has advised during its genesis.

“we have Launched today the first large-scale project for hydrogen, green for Europe, demonstrating that thanks to renewables, and technological innovation it is possible to continue responding to the needs of electrification and decarbonisation of our industry. The initiative shows the way and the opportunities offered by the energy transition to develop innovative projects as the focus of the industrialization and employment in our country”, explains Ignacio Galán, chairman of Iberdrola.

“The partnership with Iberdrola allows Fertiberia take a further step in its ambition of becoming a european reference for sustainable solutions to the agriculture and lead the paradigm shift of the transition energy in the chemical sector, thanks to the manufacture of ammonia green from renewable energy sources native”, indicates Javier Goñi, president of Fertiberia.
