Housing tax 2022: the dates you absolutely need to know

Will pay or not pay? This year, only 20% of French people still have to pay housing tax, which will then be permanently abolished in France. If you paid it in 2021, you may still be affected this year or you may be pleasantly surprised to be (finally) exempt.

As a reminder, you may be subject to this tax whether you own, rent or occupy accommodation free of charge. Here are the ones who will have to settle it one last time:

If you are part of one of these tranches, you will receive a tax letter in the coming days, giving you the amount to be paid as well as the deadlines. The good news is that you will not pay everything: as the Public Service website explains, the households concerned “will benefit from a reduction of 65%, regardless of their income”.

If you are affected again by this tax, note these dates in your calendar.

If you haven’t received your housing tax by the end of next month, the Public Service website advises you to “contact your tax office”, as you may have been exempt. “Check that you meet the exemption conditions or contact your tax office to check it”, concludes the website. Please note, in the event of late payment, you will be subject to a 10% penalty beyond 45 days following the date of collection.

If you feel that you have been wrongly taxed, do not stand idly by! You can submit a claim to your public finance center. An application online, by post or on site must be made before December 31, 2023. If you have any doubts or questions about your housing tax, you can also contact the tax information service on 0809 401 401.
