An essential service in the city, garbage collection is an even more necessary need in a climate that has begun. Some cities are seeing this already high tax increase again.

However, the service was interrupted for several weeks for residents of certain French cities. Unfortunately, these heavily affected residents will not win their case. Indeed, the latter is paid at the same time as the property tax. “The TEOM is due for any property subject to property tax on built properties or which is temporarily exempt from it (new construction for example). You will have to pay the TEOM if you are the owner or usufructuary”, can we read on the site of the Ministry of the Interior.

This local tax, associated with the property tax, is used to finance the collection of household waste. Even if this bad news was expected, in particular because of the economic context, it was confirmed. Indeed, according to a study carried out by the firm FSL, a specialist in local finance, of the 192 towns with more than 40,000 inhabitants, the result is that the rates of TEOM are changing. On average, these tariffs will increase by 2.2% in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Another increase directly linked to the TEOM, the property tax also makes people cringe, with an increase of at least 7.1% everywhere in France. In the context of a general rise in prices, municipalities will benefit from a flat-rate increase in property tax. The revaluation should represent nearly 3 billion additional euros, in total, for communities.
