Since March 7, the CGT-Chimie has blocked several refineries preventing the release of fuel. If for the moment, the consequences were not visible, this week, many stations will face new shortages. These renewed strikes more generally represent the protests of public sector employees. Indeed, air and rail transport, ports, garbage collectors, and education continue to mobilize against pension reform. The strikes, initially planned for the most part until Monday March 20, should be renewed following Elisabeth Borne’s announcement on Thursday March 16.
The inter-union met Thursday evening, after the mobilization of 49.3 by the government. Following this meeting, Catherine Perret, Confederal Secretary of the CGT, spoke about future mobilizations. Broadcast live by BFMTV, Catherine Perret announced that the inter-union “calls for local union meetings this weekend” before the new day of mobilization on Thursday March 23. Apart from these gatherings, the refinery unions continued to mobilize and block many TotalEnergies refineries in France such as that of Normandy.
The consequences are beginning to be felt. TotalEnergies, however, recalled that the main stocks remain “high” and that the “teams are mobilized to meet demand which could be more sustained than usual”. In addition, this blockage led to an increase in prices. For gasoline, there is an increase of two cents this week. Le Figaro has thus established the list of departments affected by shortages based on the figures of fuel prices.
“Only service stations in mainland France that sell more than 500m3 of petroleum products per year are taken into account, excluding E85 and LPG, which are much less used,” the newspaper specifies.
