Cakes, muffins, pancakes… Do you like to bake them? Pay attention ! Various flours have been subject to voluntary recalls since August 19, 2022, according to Rappel Conso.

Why are they being recalled? The risk of the presence of ergot alkaloids, a toxin produced by a fungus, Claviceps purpurea, informs the LNS (National Health Laboratory) of Luxembourg.

However, this parasite carries a health risk for the consumer. Adverse effects such as “convulsion attacks, painful spasms, diarrhea, headaches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes hallucinations” may appear, explains Dr. Sc Claude Schummer to the laboratory. This therefore makes the product unfit for consumption.

Make sure you haven’t purchased the products affected by the recalls. These are flours from the Moulins Waast brand. Planet has produced the slideshow below which presents the potentially contaminated foodstuffs and the references to know to identify them.

The consumption of these products, commonly used to make bread and various recipes, is therefore not recommended by Rappel Conso. It is therefore advisable to destroy the foodstuffs concerned or to bring them back to the point of sale. Thus, you will be able to obtain a refund.

Above all, you must consult your doctor in case of symptoms, because these toxins can trigger a gangrenous form. “The blood vessels of the extremities shrink, causing a burning sensation […] to gangrene, with the consequence, death”, according to the LNS site.
