Food recalls are often prompted by the suspected presence, or detection of high doses, of scopolamine, a tropane alkaloid. Tropane alkaloids are natural plant components but some can contaminate foodstuffs containing cereals (millet, sorghum, buckwheat). Their toxicity can cause food poisoning.
In case of excessive consumption of the product, scopolamine can cause temporary symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, numbness and headache. It can also cause problems in people with cardiovascular disease. In large doses, poisoning can be fatal. Psychiatric sequelae can last several months after the poisoning.
