Flea market: the objects to unearth at the moment

Some objects sell for exorbitant prices in antique shops. It is therefore better to be attentive when you walk in the flea market of your village, because you could well come across real nuggets without even noticing it.

So that this error does not happen to you, Planet has contacted Le Vieux Matos, an antique dealer located in the town of La Chapelle-Saint-Martin-en-Plaine in Loir-et-Cher. “At the moment, the objects that must be found at all costs are those dating from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Those are reselling well.”, he explains.

Indeed, the antiques market evolves, like all the others, according to demand. However, at the moment, fashion is focused on this type of object which is thus very sought after. This may seem surprising, because they even sell for much more than older objects.

“Currently, you sell a plastic chest of drawers from Colombo from the 1960s better than a Louis XV sideboard, signed and stamped.”, regrets the expert. “Napoleon III, Louis XVI, Louis XV, you have to forget. These objects are not selling at the moment. To sell them you have to be the cheapest, so it’s not really selling anymore”, continues- he.

Indeed, the owner of Vieux Matos specifies that he can sell a Colombo chest of drawers between 8,000 and 10,000 euros while a 13th century tomb chest of drawers will go for 1,500 or 2,000 euros.

“The real thing to look for is furniture from the 1950s or thereabouts, because those are really the things that are trending right now.”

Besides that, there are still certain types of objects that can be real treasures and with which you have to be careful. “At the moment, it’s ceramics that are selling very well, those from the 1950s or 1960s. These are brands like Blin, Derval or even Zobel”, explains the second-hand dealer.

“It has to be rare, people are looking for the rare. Currently, common pieces like Limoges ceramics, you have to avoid because there is a shovel of them.”, he specifies. In the same spirit, there is also art glassware which is in demand at the moment and is selling well.

Apart from ceramics and art glassware, there are also other items that are particularly sought after by collectors.

Similarly, you should always look for military objects such as uniforms or helmets that may be of interest to collectors. More generally, you have to keep a close eye on all that is art and deco or even painting from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s which, as the antique dealer of Vieux Matos previously explained, were particularly in demand at this period.
