In the fight against mass tourism, there is a change of heart in politics on Mallorca. The President of the Island Council is now announcing another drastic measure, which he loudly criticized last year.
The Balearic Prime Minister Marga Prohens recently commented on the problems of mass tourism on Mallorca and the nearby islands. In their eyes, the limit has now been reached.
Just two days later, the conservative island council followed suit. Its president, Llorenç Galmés, announced a serious decision at a press conference.
Galmés announced that it wanted to drastically reduce the number of guest beds. Just last year he loudly criticized a similar proposal from the left-wing government.
According to information from “Mallorca Zeitung”, the island council’s plans include reducing the number of beds in tourist accommodation by 4.2%. This would mean that the number of guest beds would fall from 430,000 to 412,000.
Of the remaining beds, 308,000 are earmarked for hotels and 104,000 for holiday rentals. This would mean that hotels would lose 7,000 guest beds and holiday rentals would lose 11,000.
Island President Galmés justifies the change in his views by saying that it would be one of the biggest challenges on Mallorca and that holiday flows had to be organized.
To ensure that harmonious coexistence between travelers and locals continues, he stands by his decision and calls for “courageous measures”.
Galmés further explains that it is the first time that guest beds have been reduced in Mallorca. He says: “After eight years of the Left Pact and excessive growth in terms of guest beds, we have to focus on containment.”
At the press conference, Galmés and the head of tourism in the island council, José Marcial Rodríguez, spoke out in favor of further action against illegal holiday rentals. The fight against mass tourism in Mallorca is taking place on several fronts.
