Extended Cold Weather Advisory in Chicago Area: Prepare for Dangerous Wind Chills
A cold weather advisory has been extended for the entire Chicago area as dangerous wind chills are expected in the coming days. The National Weather Service announced that the advisory will be in effect from 9 p.m. on Monday until noon on Tuesday. This follows a previously issued advisory that started at 6 p.m. on Sunday and lasted until noon on Monday.
Dangerous Wind Chills Forecasted
Forecast models predict that wind chills on Sunday and Monday morning could drop well below zero, but the coldest wind chills are expected to impact the area on Monday night and into Tuesday morning. Temperatures are set to fall below zero with wind chills reaching up to 25 degrees below zero. At these extreme temperatures, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin. To help combat the cold, Chicago and many suburban communities are offering warming centers for residents to seek relief from the frigid temperatures.
Amtrak Train Services Affected
In addition to the cold weather advisory, Amtrak trains originating in or destined for Chicago will face cancellations this week. Five different lines will be impacted by the agency’s cold weather plans, affecting trains servicing the Pacific Northwest, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
Historic Cold Temperatures
The National Weather Service reports that the overnight lows on Sunday and Monday will mark the first time since January 2024 that temperatures have dropped below zero in the city of Chicago. Even colder temperatures are expected on the following night, with temperatures of minus-5 or colder in the city. The average high temperature for mid-to-late January is typically around 31.1 degrees, while average lows are in the teens. The period between January 17 and 23 usually experiences the coldest average temperatures of the year.
Relief in Sight
Although temperatures are expected to remain far below average, there is some relief on the horizon. By Wednesday, high temperatures will climb back into the mid-20s, and Thursday will bring even warmer weather with highs reaching into the 30s across the area.
