European women possess a gene of fertility inherited directly from the neanderthals

One out of every three european women has in its genes a piece of DNA very particular, is a gene inherited directly from the neanderthals , and whose function is to help to encode the receptor of the hormone progesterone (PGR). According to a study recently published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, the progesterone receptor is closely associated with higher fertility, less bleeding during the early stages of pregnancy, and fewer miscarriages. The work has been carried out by a team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, in Germany, and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
