(Warsaw) Poland’s captain and top scorer Robert Lewandowski will miss Sunday’s first Euro 2024 match against the Netherlands due to a thigh injury, the Polish Football Federation’s doctor said on Tuesday .

“We are doing everything so that Robert can play the second match against Austria,” said doctor Jacek Jaroszewski, in a statement.

The Polish star was injured on Monday during a preparation match against Turkey. Robert Lewandowski came off in the 33rd minute of the match won 2-1 by the Poles on Monday in Warsaw.

The 35-year-old FC Barcelona striker played in the last three editions of the Euro during which he scored four goals in eleven matches.

The Poles are in group D with the French, the Austrians and the Dutch and will start the Euro against the latter on Sunday.

The selection doctor said he was rather reassured by the state of health of the two other injured Polish attackers, Pawel Dawidowicz and Karol Swiderski.

“Both players are expected to return to full training within three-four days of the treatment being implemented,” he informed.

Poland already lost another striker on Friday, Arkadiusz Milik, injured during the first preparation match against Ukraine (3-1).

The former OM player, who was withdrawn from the Euro, underwent microsurgery on his left meniscus, his current club, Juventus Turin, said on Monday, without giving the duration of his unavailability.
