With the approach of the summer holidays, inflation is still not decreasing in France, quite the contrary. In June, the consumer price index accelerated to 5.8%, INSEE said.

The acceleration of energy prices is one of the causes invoked by the national institute to explain this exceptional situation.

In a joint op-ed published in the Sunday Journal on June 26, 2022, Catherine MacGregor, Managing Director of Engie, Jean-Bernard Lévy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of EDF, and Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, alert the public authorities as well as the French on this soaring price. According to them, it “threatens our social and political cohesion and impacts too heavily on the purchasing power of families”.

To deal with it, they call for “collective and individual awareness and action so that each of us – each consumer, each company – changes its behavior and immediately limits its energy, electricity, gas and oil products”.

According to them, this is the only way to avoid a shortage of gas, electricity and oil next winter.

According to the leaders of Engie, EDF and TotalEnergies, action must be taken this summer to prepare for next winter. Indeed, this “will allow us to be better prepared to tackle next winter and in particular to preserve our gas reserves”, he adds.

In addition, the summer period is a season conducive to energy savings. At this time of year, your heating, lighting, hot water and electricity needs in general are lower than in winter.
