Known for its parkas and numerous winter coats, the Canada Goose company is abandoning its Boisbriand plant, which opened in 2017. Nearly 180 employees would lose their jobs by July, according to notices of collective layoffs published by the Ministry of Labour.
“Our lease expiring at the end of July, Canada Goose will consolidate the activities of our Boisbriand plant in our Chabanel premises during the following months, including the transfer of employees, replied the company in an official statement sent by email to La Presse. The historic Chabanel garment district is a perfect fit for Montreal manufacturers and has many advantages, including access to public transit, talent, and opportunities for future expansion in the area. We remain deeply committed to our business in Canada and will continue to manufacture our products locally in Quebec and across the country. »
For the moment, it has been impossible to know how many employees in total work at the Boisbriand plant or to know the number of employees who will be transferred to Montreal.
Last fall, during a visit to the facilities of the specialist in winter coats, rue Chabanel, company representatives said that a total of 300 positions were vacant in the Montreal and Boisbriand factories. In Quebec, Canada Goose then had 700 employees.
