Who has never forgotten their national identity card in a trouser pocket, or in a drawer? Thanks to experiments with an application capable of hosting this essential document, the future digital identity card should be available from the beginning of 2023, according to information from Capital.

This dematerialized version, which will serve as an official document, will be in the form of a “digital clone in the France Identity application”, specifies the magazine. You can therefore, in a few clicks, prove your identity with your smartphone.

The objective of the project was to have a digital copy of the national identity card, while ensuring that the data inside is not hackable. You must first have the new national identity card which contains an NFC chip.

How does it work, exactly? The “France Identity” application, installed on your smartphone, will read the NFC chip on your physical identity card. Your digital, single-use, time-limited document will then be customizable to how you want to use it.

If this virtual document will not yet replace the identity card as you have always known it, it can be used to retrieve a package in your name, connect to an online public service or prove your age.

“This dematerialized version will not however have the same value as the physical document, it will indeed be necessary to wait two or three years for it to become a real equivalent”, specifies Capital.
