A woman reveals in a post on the social network Reddit that she refused to give up her pre-booked airplane seat so that a child could sit next to his family. Before her flight from Africa via Dubai, she had reserved an aisle seat so she could move around the plane without disturbing anyone.
She had also ordered a special meal due to her health requirements and had it delivered to this specific place.
During the flight, a family asked them to switch seats so they could all sit together. At first she agreed, but believed it was just a move to the other side of the aisle.
However, when she realized she should move to a middle seat, she declined. Another passenger then stood up and criticized them for separating parents from their children.
The woman describes in her post: “Another passenger stands up and says he has a seat in the back that I can switch to (no idea how) and I said no. I said I booked my seat and ordered a special meal and there was no question that I would move to a middle seat. He then started criticizing me loudly and said he hoped I understood that I had broken up a family.”
After the man loudly criticized the situation on board, the crew’s attention was drawn to the situation. Eventually another passenger intervened and switched seats to allow the children to sit next to each other.
Many commenters on the Reddit post shared the woman’s sentiments and praised her for standing her ground. Some felt that if the family really wanted to sit together, they should have booked the appropriate seats.
Mitra Amirzadeh, an Orlando flight attendant, revealed to the Daily Mail how she gets passengers to swap seats with families in similar situations. It would “punish” passengers who refuse to change seats.
She had already said to passengers: “OK, so will you look after the toddler? Then you will also want their snacks and coloring books, because they will need them.”
This usually encourages passengers to change their seats quickly. The flight attendant also explains that unpleasant situations due to seat swaps occur on about 80 percent of her monthly flights. However, it would rarely intervene in cases that do not involve children.
