Charleston Open | Leylah Fernandez’s journey ends in round two

(Charleston) Leylah Annie Fernandez worked hard, but that didn’t stop her from going down 7-5, 7-6 (6) to Paula Badosa in the second round of the Charleston tennis tournament on Wednesday after -noon.

Fernandez, the 51st player in the world, bowed out after an hour and 51 minutes of play in front of the 12th seed. Badosa now has a perfect 3-0 career record against the Quebecer.

The 20-year-old Lavalloise was messy for much of the game against the Spaniard. In particular, she committed an impressive total of seven double faults, against only one for Badosa. In addition, the latter was more effective than her with her first and second service ball.

Fernandez certainly stayed in the game throughout it, but she never really managed to break through Badosa’s game. The Maple Leaf representative was limited to two service breaks in four occasions, while her 25-year-old opponent converted three of her 10 break attempts.

Badosa will now face Russian Diana Shnaider, 95th in the world, in the round of 16.

As for Fernandez, she will be back on the court later today with American Taylor Townsend to start her doubles tournament against Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa and Alicja Rosolska.

On the other hand, Ontario’s Katherine Sebov will try to get her ticket to the round of 16 in singles in the evening against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, the fourth seed of the tournament.
