CF Montreal defender Robert Thorkelsson has been selected by the Iceland Under-21 team for their two friendlies later this month, the Montreal club announced on Tuesday.

The Icelanders will begin a spell abroad against the Austria U21 team on June 16, before facing Hungary on the 19th. He will join his national team on the 12th, then return to Montreal on the 20th.

Thorkelsson has played eight games with CF Montreal this season, including two starts, for a total of 203 minutes, as well as two more in the Canadian league.

The 21-year-old defender has played 13 career games for the Iceland Under-21 side, making his debut on September 4, 2020 in a European U21 Championship qualifier against Sweden. In 2022, he also got his first playing minutes with the Iceland senior team, playing four preseason international matches against Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Estonia and Sweden.

Thorkelsson wore the Icelandic U21 captain’s armband for the first time on November 17 in a friendly against Scotland.
