(Montreal) CF Montreal defender Robert Thorkelsson was selected by the Iceland Under-21 team on Tuesday.

Thorkelsson will wear his nation’s colors in an international friendly match against the Ireland Under-21 team on Sunday in Cork, Ireland.

Thorkelsson will join his national team on Thursday and he will be back in Montreal next Monday.

Thorkelsson has played 12 career games with the Icelandic national under-21 team. He made his debut on September 4, 2020, in a European U21 Championship qualifier against Sweden.

In 2022, Thorkelsson also got his first minutes with the Iceland senior team, playing four exhibition international matches against Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Estonia and Sweden.

The 20-year-old defenseman played his first minutes with CF Montreal in 2023, coming on as an 80th-minute substitute in a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
