Citing financial constraints, CBC indicated Friday that it was canceling the broadcast of its New Year’s special.

The program will be replaced by a Just For Laughs special, hosted by comedian Mae Martin, followed by episodes of Comedy Night with Rick Mercer.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, the public broadcaster cited “financial pressures” to justify the notable change.

For more than twenty years, CBC has celebrated New Year’s Eve with a special broadcast of the comedy television series Royal Canadian Air Farce.

Since 2018, it has been replaced by a special one-hour program, which notably included musical numbers and fireworks.
