“This is the principle and it must be remembered: a merchant cannot refuse a payment in cash”. On Wednesday November 16, 2022, the Banque de France called the Casino and Carrefour groups to order. The reason ? The inability to pay cash in some stores, especially on Sundays due to a lack of staff. In some stores, therefore, customers were forced to use automatic cash registers that did not accept banknotes or coins.

Unanswered for the moment, this written request was made to the leaders “recently”, according to Christophe Baud-Berthier, director of fiduciary activities, quoted by Ouest France. Supermarkets are responsible for making payment possible in coins and banknotes for the customer, every day of the week. As the regional daily recalls, the airport management company Groupe ADP had also been pinned down a few months earlier, after withdrawing the possibility of paying for parking in cash during the Covid-19 period.
