(Ottawa) The number of job vacancies fell 5.8% in July to its lowest level since May 2021, Statistics Canada said Thursday.

According to the federal agency, the number of job vacancies fell by 43,100 to 701,300 during the month, continuing a downward trend seen since June of last year.

Year over year, the number of vacant positions decreased by 28.1%, or 273,700, Statistics Canada said.

The number of unfilled jobs in retail trade decreased by 10,800, or 12.8%, while those in the accommodation and food services sector saw a decline of 10,400, or 11.6%. .

The job vacancy rate – the number of vacant positions expressed as a proportion of the total number of occupied and vacant positions – decreased by 0.3 points to 3.9% in July.

Statistics Canada noted there were 1.7 unemployed people for every job vacancy in July, up from 1.5 in June and 1.2 at the start of the year.
